Almost everyone owns at least two internet-connected devices today, and most people carry three or four. That reality creates a constant, low-grade friction: the photo is on your phone but you need it on your laptop; the document is on your work computer but you need it at home; the link is on your tablet but you are typing on a desktop. There are more ways to solve this than ever, and each one comes with real trade-offs. This guide walks through the common options honestly, including their downsides.
This is the oldest trick in the book, and it still works — but it is slow. You need to open a mail client, find your own address (often saved, sometimes not), attach the file, send it, switch devices, open the mail app again, wait for it to sync, and download the attachment. For a quick text snippet, that is five or six steps for something that should take one. Email also has attachment size limits that vary by provider, and file compression can degrade image and video quality.
Cloud drives are excellent for files you want to keep long-term and access repeatedly across many devices. The trade-off is setup overhead: both devices need the same account signed in, the app or web interface needs to sync, and for anything beyond a small file, upload and download time adds up. Cloud storage is also overkill for something you only need once — like sharing a single link or a short note — since it leaves a permanent copy sitting in your storage quota unless you remember to delete it.
If both devices are the same ecosystem — two Apple devices for AirDrop, or two Android devices for Nearby Share — this is genuinely one of the fastest options available, often completing in a few seconds over local Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct. The catch is the ecosystem lock-in: AirDrop does not work between an iPhone and a Windows laptop, and Nearby Share does not bridge Android to iOS. If your two devices live in different ecosystems, neither option helps.
A wired transfer is still the fastest way to move very large files — video footage, full backups, large project folders — because it is not limited by internet bandwidth. But it requires having the right cable on hand, which is surprisingly often not the case, and it does not help at all when the two devices are not physically next to each other.
Sending yourself a message on WhatsApp Web or a "Notes to Self" chat is common, and it is reasonably fast if you are already logged into the same account on both devices. The downside is that most messaging apps compress images and video by default to save bandwidth, which matters if you need the original quality for editing or printing. Message history can also get cluttered, burying the file you actually need among unrelated conversations.
Classic Bluetooth transfer still exists on most operating systems, but it has fallen out of favor because it is genuinely slow for anything beyond a small file, and the pairing process between unfamiliar devices can be fiddly. It remains useful mainly as a fallback when there is no internet connection at all.
